In the early 1980s, a large number of wind farms were built in places like Kern County, the San Gorgonio Pass, and the Altamont Pass in response to federal tax incentives. Despite this early boom, California’s wind generation capacity didn’t grow much for over twenty years…

On October 4th, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) approved a Resource Management Plan (RMP) Amendment that authorizes oil and natural gas leasing and development on federal lands across 11 counties in central California.

In 2019, Biologists at Aspen found themselves having a busy year.  The rainfall earlier in the year led to an abundance of wildflowers, which in turn provided extra food for an abundance of wildlife. 

Highway 96 is a long, winding, two-lane road that matches the dramatic twists and turns of the Klamath River. The long stretch of road from Yreka to Happy Camp greets visitors with steep valley ridges, heavily forested mountains, and soaring bald eagles.

Since opening, the SF office has been in several different suites in the historic Russ Building in the heart of the Financial District. This central location allows Aspen’s Bay Area staff to commute by local transit or on foot!

The Practice Director for Aspen’s Energy Policy and Market Assessment Group, Catherine Elder, submitted testimony in a federal class action lawsuit involving an independent natural gas provider.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has asked Aspen to prepare an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and help with an extended application review process for the proposed rebuilding of over 300 miles of an existing transmission line.

Aspen Environmental Group’s aquatic biologists have busy completing field work and volunteering. The team completed spring site evaluation at three potential translocation sites for the federally threatened Santa Ana sucker in the San Bernardino National Forest.

Wind energy is an important element of California’s energy portfolio. According to the California Energy Commission, the state’s wind energy projects provide 5,644 megawatts of generating capacity, which is enough to power more than 2 million California households.

Aspen has been selected by several Los Angeles County departments to provide environmental services.

One of the perks of being a wildlife biologist is the opportunity to venture off the beaten path in support of projects. While doing surveys this year, Aspen’s biologists were fortunate to locate and monitor a Cooper’s hawk nest.

Aspen’s multidisciplinary engineering and scientific staff and our Energy Resource Economics practice has a history of providing state energy agencies and local jurisdictions with advice and analysis on energy and the environment.

Aspen biologists have been making a difference by teaching elementary school students about the local animals and plants that can be found in their communities. Agoura Hills Biologist Jennifer Lancaster taught a workshop on microscopes and botany to fifth graders.

Aspen’s Annual Corporate Retreat took place last week at the Luskin Conference Center at UCLA. Employees from every office gathered for two days of great training, collaboration, and inspiration.
