Energy Policy and Market Assessment Group Supports Policy Makers with Creative Ways to Reduce Natural Gas Usage
Aspen’s Energy Policy and Market Assessment team, specializing in energy economics, is working on policy analysis to support the move to a smaller natural gas system in California. Today California uses, on average, 5.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year. SB 100 requires that gas to be “zero net carbon” by 2050. Aspen built a model that allows policymakers to analyze alternate trajectories to meet the SB 100 target, with calculations split between customer end uses on the PG&E and Southern California Gas systems. It also allows one to analyze the impact of specific percentage end-use reductions in individual customer classes. The model is simple to use and offers instantly understandable visual displays. Aspen is also looking at how much renewable gas or hydrogen can be blended into the existing natural gas pipeline system without compromising safety. The ability to blend these supplies into the pipeline gas stream might alleviate the need for more drastic reductions in natural gas use.
