Aspen’s Catherine Elder Speaks at Heartland Consumers Power District Annual Meeting

Aspen’s Energy Resource Economics practice director Catherine Elder spoke at the Heartland Consumers Power District Annual Meeting on April 10, 2014, in Madison, South Dakota. Asked to address “The Rush Towards Natural Gas,” Elder described the factors leading to so much focus on natural gas for use in power generation, as well as expected natural gas market dynamics in light of shale production and hydraulic fracturing, methane leakage issues, and access issues for South Dakota. Heartland supplies wholesale electric power and energy to 27 municipal electric systems in rural portions of South Dakota, Minnesota and northwestern Iowa. Its current resource portfolio consists of coal-fired generation imported from Nebraska and Wyoming, along with wind and diesel-fired peaking resources in South Dakota.
