A Preliminary Environmental Profile of California's Imported Electricity (CEC)
This report provides a preliminary environmental assessment of the impacts to air quality, water resources, and biological resources associated with California's imported energy from renewable energy resources (wind, geothermal and biomass), coal, hydropower, natural gas, and nuclear sources. For purposes of this report two regions (Northwest and Southwest) were studied. The electricity mix for the Northwest and Southwest Regions are described. Applicable environmental laws are identified, with a particular emphasis on air quality regulations. Technologies and pollution controls are also presented. The generation characteristics for each fuel type are described and particular attention is given to coal, which is the predominant energy source in the West, and to hydropower, which is a significant source of energy from the Pacific Northwest.
