Project Type: Energy
WESTCARB Environmental Documentation and PIER Global Climate Change Research
The Aspen Team is preparing environmental documentation for the Public Interest Energy Research
(PIER) program of the California Energy Commission in support of several projects greenhouse gas
sequestration projects proposed by the West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration partnership
(WESTCARB). WESTCARB is a consortium of universities, resource agencies, and other organizations,
including the California Energy Commission, investigating the potential of terrestrial and geologic
methods to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Aspen's work will help permit CO2
injection at saline formations and oil and gas reservoirs beneath Sacramento County. Aspen is also
preparing environmental documents for a project involving forest planting on previously un-forested
lands such as grazing range, which allows sequestering carbon in the plant material.
