Project Type: Habitat Restoration
Kino Ecosystem Restoration Project, Tucson
Aspen prepared an Ecosystem Restoration Report under the Section 1135 program for a 27-acre
portion of the Tucson (Ajo) Detention Basin in Tucson, Arizona. This project involved the
modification of the detention basin in order to restore riparian and wetland habitat native
to the Sonoran Desert. Aspen also prepared a design modification report when the restoration
area was increased to 50 acres. Reclaimed water from a local sewage treatment plant will be
utilized to support the restoration effort, allowing the creation of riparian, wetland, and
open water habitat. The habitat restoration effort will be undertaken in conjunction with
plans to develop the basin with recreational uses, including a bicycle/hiking trail and a
public golf course.
