Visual Vapor Plume Modeling

Aspen has developed a sophisticated modeling system to predict cooling tower and combustion stack visible vapor plume frequencies and dimensions, as well as to provide the output in a format that can be used in visual simulation models. Models used by Aspen team members include the Seasonal/Annual Cooling Tower Impact (SACTI) Model and the Combustion Stack Visible Plume (CSVP) Model. Aspen staff performs mass and energy balances to determine the exhaust conditions to model, hour by hour, based on ambient temperature and relative humidity. Aspen has conducted visual plume analyses in support of the following projects.

Power Plant Projects Greater than 300 Megawatts:

  • Avenal Energy Center (Kings County, CA)
  • Blythe Energy Project Phase II (Riverside County, CA)
  • Central Valley Energy Center (Fresno County, CA)
  • Colusa Power Project (Colusa County, CA)
  • Huntington Beach Modernization Project (Orange County, CA)
  • Inland Empire Energy Center (Riverside County, CA)
  • Palomar Energy Project (San Diego County, CA)
  • Roseville Energy Facility (Sacramento County, CA)
  • San Joaquin Valley Energy Center (Fresno County, CA)
  • Tesla Power Plant Project (Alameda County, CA)

Power Projects Less than 300 Megawatts:

  • Hanford Energy Park (Kings County, CA)
  • Magnolia Power Project (Los Angeles County, CA)
  • Modesto Irrigation Project (Stanislaus County, CA)
  • Riverside Energy Resource Center (Riverside County, CA)
  • Salton Sea Unit 6 Project (Imperial County, CA)
  • Walnut Energy Center (Stanislaus County, CA)
  • Woodland Generating Station 2 (Stanislaus County, CA)

Other Projects

  • Completion of several cooling tower ground fog analyses in support of traffic and transportation impact analyses for California Energy Commission Siting Cases.
  • Plume modeling assessment determining if an existing power plant could create plumes that could impact traffic on the Gerald Desmond Bridge.
  • Compliance assessments of proposed power plant cooling tower designs for the determination of compliance with California Energy Commission Conditions of Certification.
  • Preparation and instruction of a visual water vapor plume modeling methodology class for the California Energy Commission.
