Sunset Upper Debris Basin Debris Flow Barriers

Project Specifications

Client: Los Angeles County Department of Public Works

Location: Los Angeles County

Services: Biological Resources

Aspen prepared a Biological Resources Technical Report and Preliminary Jurisdictional Waters and Wetlands Delineation Report for the proposed project. The project site is located within the foothills northeast of the City of Burbank, within Los Angeles County. More specifically, it’s located within Sunset Canyon, near the end of Country Club Drive in the Verdugo Mountains. Sunset Canyon is a tributary to the Los Angeles River. The project included installation of wire rope anchors along the hillside slope and ring-net barriers (Geobrugg) across the canyon at two locations. The ring-net barriers were installed to capture debris that could come down from Sunset Canyon as a result of the La Tuna Fire that burned the hills above the project area. With the Geobruggs in place, the County maintenance crews will more easily remove debris. The Geobruggs will be in place for a period of five years and can be reinstalled after this five year period, if needed. The County used the recommendations in the two technical reports to guide the construction of the project, protect biological resources in the project area, and support permitting of the project.
