Construction of New Long-Duration Energy Storage Project Approved by CEC

Earlier this week, based on the CEQA analysis prepared by Aspen Environmental Group, the California Energy Commission approved a $30 million grant to Form Energy, Inc. to construct a new non-lithium long-duration battery demonstration project in Mendocino County. The project would provide 5 megawatts (MW) of multi-day storage with a storage capacity of 500 megawatt hours (MWh) using iron-air battery technology. When fully charged, the project could discharge power to the grid continuously for an unprecedented 100 hours allowing California to harness excess renewable energy for off-peak use.
